After an abundance of grimy underground hits on BC Recordings, several of which unexpectedly graced the top 60 of the UK national chart, BC began 2003 by producing their first mainstream targeted project; featuring a battering of bashment reggae style vocals, hooked up by Vegas, 'Mo-Fire' smashed its way to number 21 in the UK national chart, whilst knocking Michael Jackson off of the Number 1 spot in the UK National Dance Chart. Shortly after, this was followed by D-Kay, Epsilon and Stamina's 'Barcelona' - this also rocketed up the mainstream national chart to Number 14 and remained in the Top 20 for 4 weeks - A track that the collective signed to their newly formed BC Authorised label; a label which they had purposefully created as an outlet for the more viable sounds of drum & bass, with the emphasis on precise yet experimental vocals.
After the mainstream success of the aforementioned tracks, many thought that like many a dance collective before them, BCUK's focus would be swung towards profiting from 'rinsing out' the mainstream. To their dedicated fans delights this was not the case… After proving to both themselves and their critics that they could exist proudly amongst the limelight, the Princes of darkness were quick to 'duck out' and return to their treasured underground. Since then, the music that BCUK have both created and released has been deeper, darker and deadlier than ever! It seems that the mainstream and everything it represents only fuels BCUK's true creativity. The first harvest, post 'Mo-Fire' and 'Barcelona', yielded 'The Bullet Time EP' which was BCUK's final release of 2003. Featuring evil punctuating analogue bass twists following a cinematic screen intro, to no great surprise it went straight in at Number 1 in the BBC's drum&bass chart and left evil forebodings in its trail of dance floors worldwide. Shortly after that the collective had an equally successful release with the beautiful 'True Romance' on Goldie's legendary Metalheadz imprint - a track that is still at the front end of many of the scene's top DJs record boxes today.
In 2004, the collective launched another altogether different label named BC Presents: A label conceived by Vegas and Maldini to showcase music from the best breakthrough talent the global drum&bass scene had to offer. After a barrage of successful 12”s throughout the year including the Sonic and Silver's remix of Fresh and Vegas' anthem of epic proportions 'Rush Hour'. However 2005 is all about the label's debut long player 'Bad Taste' which promises to include exclusively unreleased tracks from breakthrough producers from across the globe. Best explained by Vegas, 'There's just so much quality unsigned music out there that needs to be noticed, tracks from USA, Europe, Australasia we've literally been all over the place to fill this LP.' BCUK fans will also be pleased to know that the compilation includes something new from Vegas and Maldini: 'Mediation' collaboration with Noisia and 'Facing The Sun' collaboration with the mighty Teebee. It's important to appreciate that this album is comprised of a whole list of talented breakthrough artists all A&R'd by Vegas: Body & Soul, Chase & Status, The Upbeats, State Of Mind, The Alliance etc. All of whom admit to BCUK having had a huge influence on their sound, and some even go so far as to say that BCUK are the very reason they even started.
What's next for Vegas? It's all about his emergence as a solo artist - (DJ/Producer) After years of back to back sets and in house label and production collaborations - Vegas has decided that 2005 is the right time to finally spread his wings. His label DEFIANCE: best described as a label dedicated to the DJs - will be taking full advantage of all the relationships that Vegas has developed over the years with all the scene's most prominent producers. Vegas also plans to put out previously unreleased BCUK material as well as a whole host of remixes. So watch out for that! Always seen first and foremost as THE DJ of the award winning collective, be sure to check out Vegas in your area soon, as he brings his undiluted sound bursting with brilliant vibes, always showcasing the best music this global scene has to offer.
